A Lesson on Preparedness from Summer Camp

A story from Army Reserve summer camp, told to me by a guy I know. The camp was in late July, in Kansas. Not exactly a time and place known for “I wish I’d brought a sweater”.

Toward the end a front came through, bringing rain and about twenty degrees cooler temperatures, so that night it was in the 60s instead of 80s, and the next day was 80 instead of 100. This doesn’t sound bad, unless you’re wet and tired, at which time even fairly mild temperatures can become dangerous.

This guy is the cautious sort, so he’d taken some cool/mild cold weather gear along, just in case, so he was able to change into it. Nobody else in the unit had brought that gear. In the morning, people felt downright chilly, and the ones who had gotten wet and decided “Screw it, it’s summer and I’m tired” and went to sleep woke up shivering, because in those conditions wind chill is a thing even in summer.

Worse, that chill can lead to hypothermia.  Here there were medics to take care of them, but for a small group or lone person, in a situation where things are already difficult to bad, it's potentially life-threatening.

So remember: even in summer, depending on where you are or going, having something a bit warmer to change into is a good idea because Murphy is a bastard.

Prairie Landmarks

A while back I sent a picture of my normal work environment to one of my friends who lives in the Rockies. His first reaction was “How do you navigate without landmarks?” Living near the Missouri river, we have flat plains where the riverbed once was centuries ago, with low hills on either side. Those flat plains are fertile cropland and can stretch up to 30 miles between the hills, making for a landscape almost as flat as a calm ocean. When you factor in the curvature of the Earth, it is easy to find yourself in a sea of green with very few prominent landmarks to orient yourself by. Add in 10 foot tall corn fields on both sides of a road and getting lost can be an issue. Bugging out or just traveling through this terrain wouldn't seem like much of a hassle, but without knowing the landmarks it could be a challenge.

Roads
Roads are sometimes laid out in a square grid, but with the reduction in funding for maintenance over the last 40 years many of the roads have been abandoned or dropped to Minimum Maintenance Road (MMR) status. MMR means they get no gravel and the ruts will get scraped out as the maintenance crews have spare time. The only thing that will save a road from being reclassified as MMR is an occupied house on the road, and even then the county will only maintain the road up to the house if it is the only one. Many of the well-placed MMRs around here are known as good places for kids to party, but it's been that way for decades.

Railroads
We have a few major railroad lines that cut through the county. Constant maintenance and rail traffic makes them a dependable route of travel, if not always the safest. Many of the smaller companies have gone bankrupt and the lines abandoned, creating “dead” rail that connect small towns. Some of these dead lines have been repurposed as biking/hiking trails and depending on the funding available may be paved and well-maintained. Bridges seem to be the most costly feature to maintain, but even an old rail bridge will hold more foot traffic than you can physically fit on it. Several groups are combining their efforts to make an interconnected system of paved bike trails stretching more than 100 miles through the hills, which will create an easy path for foot traffic out of the cities.

Waterways
I'm lucky in that I live in an area with abundant water. It's hard to go more than a mile in any direction without finding some form of river, stream, drainage ditch, or well in my home county. Waterways and bridges are common landmarks for giving directions and easy to find.

Traveling along a waterway is usually easy because of the use of levees for flood control. Levees tend to be wide enough to drive on, but you may encounter fences and gates placed to keep normal traffic off of them. Unless there is levee maintenance in progress, the tops of the levees don't get mowed so expect tall grass and limited visibility near the edges. We lose a drunk every couple of years when they try driving on a levee and get too close to an edge.

Silos
The only real landmarks that we have out here in farm country that can be seen for any distance is the grain silos. Originally placed along the railroad lines as a way to store grain for future shipment, every small town used to have an “elevator” or Co-op with silos that stand between 50 and 120 feet tall. Most of the wooden ones have been torn down recently, but the concrete and steel silos can still be found scattered throughout the Midwest. On the flatlands they're spaced out about 10 miles apart, so if you're standing at one you can usually see the nest one up the line on the horizon. When the small towns and elevators were originally placed close to a century ago, 10 miles was about all the further anyone wanted to haul their crop. About 20 years ago the railroads stopped picking up grain from the small towns around here, it wasn't cost-effective for them, so a lot of grain companies and Co-ops have gone out of business.

Several large farming families have built their own elevators. I've got a couple of private facilities nearby that have more capacity than our smallest elevator, but they tend to build larger diameter and shorter silos. These operations tend to be close to major roads, whereas you'll see small clusters of much smaller grain bins out in the fields. Small is relative when talking about bulk storage- a bin that can “only” hold 10-20 semi-trailer loads of corn is small. You have to get into the 300-500 truck capacity range before they're considered large. For perspective, a standard semi-trailer holds close to 1000 bushels (55,000 pounds) of grain.



Even though we don't have mountain peaks to navigate by, we still have local landmarks. Knowing your local area is key to being able to travel safely through it, so get out and explore a bit. Dust off the paper maps and see how much has changed since it was printed, making notes for yourself as you go.

Prudent Prepping: SFD Responder 2.0, part 2

The dust has settled and the First 72 Hours have passed. Follow along as I build a long term plan via Prudent Prepping.

These items are similar to what SFD shows in their ad for the Responder, minus the chest seals and gauze and adding the clotting sponge. I ordered chest seals but neglected to look at the offered sizes, and I ended up accidentally ordering a large when what I really needed was the compact size. Now I have both, but I still need to tweak my placement of items to get everything to fit as neatly as possible into the pockets. The full-size are now in my car first aid kit.

I haven't had to use this ankle kit since I don't wear it regularly. Frankly, I use my mini 1st aid kit for band aids and triple antibiotic all the time, but the Adventure Medical Compact Trauma Pack just once in the 3 years I've carried it in my work gear. Still, I'd rather have equipment and never need it than need and not have anything.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Getting old sucks. I know the rest of the family here will give me grief, seeing as I'm the youngest of the regulars, but it's true. What I lack in age I make up for in mileage, and with that mileage (or just age) come aches and pains and a tendency to get hurt more easily.

One of the most insidious types of injuries are soft tissue injuries which include things like strains, sprains, and pulled muscles. As we age, flexibility decreases and recovery time from strenuous activity increases, both of which contribute to soft tissue injuries. While these are often dismissed as "aches and pains," they can be quite serious and need treatment to heal properly.

The best way to deal with soft tissue injuries is to prevent them entirely:
  • Stretch before any kind of strenuous work. 
  • Don't work in stressful positions and avoid twisting and bending awkwardly. 
  • Take care when lifting items, and carry items close to the body instead of at arm's length.
  • Take time during work to stretch and flex, especially when changing positions or if you feel sore.
  • Remain properly hydrated while working.
  • Keep yourself in as good of physical condition as possible. Healthy bodies get hurt less.

When (not if) you suffer a soft tissue injury, the proper treatment is RICE:
  • Rest: Allow your body the time it needs to heal. Avoid activity that could aggravate the injury.
  • Ice: Apply ice packs to the injured area if possible in 20 minute intervals, 20 minutes of ice and 20 minutes without. Never apply ice packs directly to the skin! I like to wrap them in hand towels, but a shirt or other cloth works just as well.
  • Compression: Use an elastic bandage or a joint brace to support the affected area, which will keep things from moving in ways that will cause further injury. Don't apply an elastic bandage too tightly, or you risk cutting off circulation and causing far more severe injury. Monitor the area while the bandage is on, and if you start to lose feeling or see a limb turn purple, remove the bandage, rest the area, and then reapply the bandage more loosely.
  • Elevation: Elevate the injured area if possible and allow joints to rest in a natural, semi-flexed position. Usually this will be the most comfortable position, which will encourage rest and speed healing. It will also limit bruising and any minor internal bleeding.
In addition to RICE, use your favorite over-the-counter pain medication as directed on the label. If this method doesn't provide substantial relief within 48-72 hours, you may need professional intervention. If you feel a pop or crack when the injury occurs, or lose major function in a limb for even a few minutes, this is not a soft tissue injury and needs treatment by a physician.

Getting old and working hard may hurt, but you can limit a lot of that.

Making a Home-Made Inverter

I'd love to have the money for a large solar array, something that could gather enough electricity and be able to store it so that I could run most of my house off-grid. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to start building that dream, but for now I'll have to be content with puttering around with small-scale solar power.

Not that the small-scale stuff is useless; it's a great way to learn more about the individual parts and get some hands-on experience that may translate into good practices if/when I ever get a larger system set up. I have a 50 Watt panel hooked up to two deep-cycle, 100 Amp-hour, batteries at the cabin we built years ago, which is more than enough to keep our cell phones charged and run a few LED lamps when we spend a few days up there. The inverter my friend installed in the system will put out 120V AC for the few things we have that run on standard household power, but it wasn't cheap and it's a small one. I've been looking for a small system that I can play with at home, something to use as a test-bed for projects that I tinker with when I have the time.

While sorting through my various electronics and electrical toys, I've found a few that run on non-standard voltages and their chargers all use 120V AC:
  • Handy-talkies that require an amateur radio license to use legally (I'm studying for one) have a 7.4V battery.
  • The cordless tools that I buy use a 20V DC battery pack.
  • My laptop computer runs on a 19V DC battery. 
  • There are a few others that fall into the same category of “useful but not available in my standard voltages”*, so I've been looking for a way to keep them running. 
The ideal method would be a solar panel hooked up to a battery bank with an inverter to output 120V AC so I can use the chargers that came with each device, but those are expensive if bought new. so it's time to scrounge around and see what I can find or modify.
Like selecting a caliber of firearm, I try to standardize my electrical toys. I've settled on 4 systems that cover most of my needs:
  • 1.5V DC: AA and a few AAA batteries to feed the flashlights and small radios. Common and cheap, with good rechargeable options available.
  • 5.0V DC: Standard USB power for charging cell phones and electronics. Easily converted to by using car chargers and “wall warts”. Rechargeable power packs are cheap and easy to find, we've reviewed a few over the years.
  • 12V DC: Car battery power as well as the standard output for home solar arrays. Deep-cycle batteries aren't cheap, but will last for years if maintained properly. A deep-cycle marine/RV battery will work longer than a car battery due to differences in the internal construction making them more tolerant of deep discharge, but giving them less surge (starting) capacity.
  • 120V AC: Standard household power, not as easy to convert to as the DC choices, but it comes in handy for running the tools and toys that you can find in most stores.
There are other options that I've chosen to avoid, like the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries for some of the higher-priced flashlights (18650- 3.6V) and the higher voltage AC (208/230V AC and 3 phase power) that I have limited need for and can survive without. I like flashlights but I don't need one that can be seen from the International Space Station, so the simple LED lights that I use are just fine. Likewise, the only things in my house that use 230V AC are the air conditioner and the furnace blower motor. I can live without air conditioning and have back-up heat if the furnace is out. I'm looking into a 120V AC blower for the furnace to be able to run it off of my small generator, but that's a project for the future right now.

The computer techs at work recently upgraded several of our networked systems and they brought in a complete change of equipment. The PCs were too outdated to be of much use, but they also replaced the Uninteruptable Power Supplies (UPS) that several of them were hooked up to. I managed to snag one out of the dumpster and took it home to play with.

A simple UPS is a battery charger feeding a battery and an inverter at the same time. As long as 120V AC power is available, the UPS will keep the battery charged and the inverter supplying 120V AC to the outlets. If the main power goes out, the battery will feed the inverter without a pause or interuption. This means we have the basis for a simple home-brew solar power system, just minus the solar panels.

The battery in the UPS I found was dead and while I could easily replace it for less than $50, it is rather small at only 6 Amp-hours. With a few crimp-on connectors and some longer wires, I can hook it up to a standard car battery or marine/RV battery and get closer to 100 Amp-hours as the UPS will “invert” the 12V DC from the battery into 120V AC for the appliance.

Even after buying a new batter, I still got a combination battery charger and inverter for free. This inverter is rated at ~250 Watts, so it's not going to run a microwave oven, but is more than enough to keep a ceiling fan going at high speed (about 100 Watts at most). Charging a laptop or portable DVD player to keep the kids entertained after the sun goes down may be close enough to their version of normal to relieve some of the stress and anxiety in a SHTF situation.

Connecting a solar panel to the battery will charge it, but how fast it charges depends on the size of the panel. There is some electrical balancing involved in adding batteries and panels to a system (stay with all the same size/brand of battery and panel and you'll be fairly safe), but in a pinch I can at least keep some of my odd-ball electronics up and running.

Keep your eyes open for chances to repurpose things. Businesses toss out lots of stuff that is outdated but still works, and your local online sales sites or thrift stores may have used UPS units for sale at much lower prices than buying new.
